MARTYRS

At the Behesht Zahra Cemetery in Tehran, hundreds of graves for young men who died during the 1979 Revolutution and the Iran-Iraq war are present reminders of Iran’s history.

At the cemetery fourteen entire blocks are dedicated to these men and are the site of frequent pilgrimages by families and friends, who often partake in picnics and long hours of mourning and prayer by the graves.

The decorations on the graves vary from glass display cases, holding artificial roses, photographs, personal belongings, religious artifacts and scriptures to engraved marble plates with famous poems of the revolution or religious verses.
